Qatar announced $50 million worth of aid to Palestine through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), the body reported.Qatar’s government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that th e aid was extended following an extraordinary ministerial meeting which took place in Rome, Italy. The meeting was also attended by the UN Secretary-General.
During the meeting a joint statement was issued in which Qatar announced that it will continue to finance projects mandated by the UNRWA.The projects are mainly geared toward s development in the education and health sector.Earlier, Qatar announced the dissemination of $9 million worth of emergency aid including medicines, foodstuff, fuel and other supplies to sustain the hospitals in Gaza Strip.
The aid announcements come at a time when Qatar is facing severe sanctions from its former Gulf allies who have cut off the oil rich country following accusations of support for extremist factions. Their point of contention is the nature of design of certain political movements in the Middle East. These movements include Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.
