Witnesses told Reuters they heard three loud explosions and that smoke was seen near the Jamriya area. Israeli fighter jets bombed several Syrian military installations around the capital of Damascus, a number of local outlets and witnesses on social media reported on Monday.
“Our air defenses are confronting an Israeli missile attack on one of our sites in the Damascus suburbs, and three of the targets were downed”, the state news agency SANA reported. The targets reportedly included the highly secretive scientific research center at Jamraya.
It is unclear what the Israeli missiles meant to hit, but the village was targeted twice by the Israelis in 2013. Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the missile strike targeted a military base near Kesweh, south of Damascus.
Israel said in October it had attacked Syrian government artillery after fire from across the armistice line hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and warned it would step up such retaliation in the future. The Israeli military has periodically conducted strikes inside Syria.
Last month the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Tehran of plotting to destroy Israel from Syria, where it has been helping fight terrorists at the government’s invitation.
